The Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, also widely known within the state as Region 2000, is a United States Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in Virginia, as defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) as of June, 2003. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 228,616 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 247,447). ==MSA components== ''Note: Since a state constitutional change in 1871, places in Virginia incorporated as a "city" are independent cities and are not located in any county.
